“A NOSSA CASA” (portuguese for “OUR HOUSE”) is a community art project that is part of the 13th edition of WOOL | Covilhã Urban Art and invites the entire community of our territory (and beyond) to participate in the collective creation of a large piece – a blanket – that will cover a house – “A NOSSA CASA” – in the historic center of Covilhã and will be integrated into the WOOL Art Route.
Each participant is challenged to create small squares or rectangles of crochet or knitting, which, when joined together, form a huge blanket that will be presented during a special moment of this edition in which we celebrate 15 years of WOOL’s activity.
However, this will never be “simply a blanket”. “A Nossa Casa”, which proposes — through the reuse of local (identity-defining) materials and the promotion of manual labor — the encounter and sharing among many (*) in the community construction of a blanket with which we will cover a house, just as we cover those we cherish, calls for care for all homes, for the street-home, for the city-home, for the planet-home, which is truly “A Nossa Casa”. This symbolism, which is local and national, but also global, will also serve to reflect on and debate the growing difficulty in buying/renting a house, on what a house means, the home that so many seek in migration, what we do daily in the preservation — environmental and social — of this common home that is our planet. It will allow us to show again that when we come together around a common construction we (re)discover ourselves, we get closer, and we can dream of new futures, more inclusive, more cohesive, more sustainable, more informed, and with more love.

(*) The meeting and collaboration, the main objective of this action, will be promoted through community work sessions that will take place at the Covilhã Activities Center, in the most remote parishes of the municipality, or through kits that will be available in various locations in our city. These kits can be picked up, used at home, and then returned, allowing everyone to participate at their own pace and in their own space.
If you have never crocheted or knitted, if you are a beginner, if you want to learn that stitch and/or technique that only your grandmother knew and you don’t remember, if you have any other questions, or if you simply want to create together with the most wonderful group of crocheters and knitters, join us in the various scheduled community work sessions.
