Covilhã cannot be understood without the rhythmic sound of the looms and the factory sirens announcing shift changes, located on the banks of the Goldra and Carpinteira rivers.
For centuries, Covilhã was a national and international centre for wool production, shaping the identity, architecture and spirit of those who live here.
This exhibition invites us to take a closer look at what remains of that past. The photographs reveal the melancholic beauty of the factories that time has silenced and which, within their peeling walls, hold the echo of generations of workers. Various factory objects accompany the images as fragments of this memory that refuses to fade away.
This “Industrial Heritage” is not intended to be an inventory of what has been left to decay, but a reflection on the future of these buildings, which hold enormous potential within them.
It aims to remind us that we have a commitment to the heritage we have inherited: to decide what to do with it today.
