Lígia Fernandes is a Portuguese visual artist and curator focused on the intersection between the visual arts, socially engaged art and community economies. In her work, she uses drawing and painting as tools to explore cultural universes, ethnographies and identities, and organization as a means to create space for sharing, collaboration and creation.

Her artistic research and practice is often the result of site-specific research and aims to address the connection with their collective identity. There is, in all her work, a permanent awareness of a Portuguese point of view. She is currently interested in studying love as a process of organizing and creating projects rooted in communities.

She is currently a PhD student in Art & Design at the Estonian Academy of Art. She holds a Postgraduate Degree in Curating and Commissioning Public Art from HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg, a Master’s Degree in Painting and a Bachelor’s Degree in Drawing from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon, and a Master’s Degree and Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from UCP-FCEE. She has dedicated herself to drawing and painting since 2014, having participated in several exhibitions, residencies and exchange programs in Portugal, Hungary, Montenegro, Latvia and Estonia.

Since 2020 she has also co-created several ongoing artistic and community projects, such as Panorama, Lisbon Drawing Club, Artists Anonymous, Art&Craft Refúgio and Mais Uno +1. Public art projects include participation in the Zambujal 360 project and the LEPAC Art Residency in Bairro da Tabaqueira.
