The start of the 12th edition of WOOL | Covilhã Urban Art was marked by the inauguration at the Covilhã Museum of a room dedicated to what is the first Urban Art festival in Portugal, and to its 14 years of action and transformation of public space and the community through Art and Culture.
This room celebrates this long journey, made up of many struggles and enormous perseverance. It celebrates our journey through 20 different locations, where we have carried out more than 250 interventions with the help of enormous talent from around the world. It celebrates these 14 years of achievements and distinctions, among which we must always highlight the Acesso Cultura – Mickaella Dantas 2024 Award, which fills us with pride. But it also celebrates 14 years of many rejections, invisibility, and prejudice, which we insist on continuing to transform.
For all these reasons, we see our entry into the Covilhã Museum as recognition of everything we have achieved so far, but with an equal commitment to the future, which will always be made for and with everyone.
Specifically, in this small room, you can discover WOOL’s founding mission and objectives. You can also find a series of videos showing our journey throughout its various editions. Inevitably, we highlight the WOOL + | More Accessible Urban Art project, winner of the Acesso Cultura – Mickaella Dantas Award, which distinguishes projects that are examples of good practices in promoting participation and access to culture in Portugal. This room offers a range of accessibility resources for people with disabilities, deaf people, or those with other specific needs, namely:
– videos with Portuguese subtitles and a Portuguese Sign Language (LGP) interpreter
– table with a tactile replica of a mural and QR code that allows access to audio description, LGP interpretation, plain language versions, and alternative and augmentative communication.
The Covilhã Museum, awarded in 2022 by APOM – Portuguese Association of Museology with the “Best Museum of the Year” award, is dedicated to all periods of occupation of the territory, unveiling and teaching the history of Covilhã, presented in various sensory and/or interactive ways, from Prehistory to the present day. It aims to be a space for dissemination, where objects interact with visitors through clear texts and images, as well as other exhibition resources that help to understand each of the periods covered. It also acts as a bridge to the territory of the city and the municipality.
