When it was founded, WOOL aimed to “involve the community in all its initiatives and activities”, recognising that this active participation would be key to fostering a sense of collective endeavour and belonging – essential for bringing about the social, cultural and civic transformation we aspired to.
In a year in which we are celebrating 15 years of activity and strengthening this community bond, “Marcha pela Esperança” (“March for Hope”) is a way of saying, in the face of these dark times – of conflict, violence and a growing indifference and individualism – that we are navigating today as a local and global society, that we are here and we want everyone to contribute to turning this around.
Therefore, together with the artist Mantraste, we are inviting primary and lower secondary school pupils from schools in the municipality of Covilhã to share their thoughts and then express their hopes and concerns, calling for the hope that is so desperately needed.
In these workshops, slogans will be devised, posters created and artistic materials produced that reflect these concerns and inspire hope.
This initiative comprises several workshops, led by Mantraste and the Covilhã Public Library throughout June. The culmination of all this will be a march taking to the streets on the afternoon of 19 June, where the children and young people of Covilhã will be able to make their voices heard
